Origins holds a bit of a special place in my heart. It was my final project in university and was what cemented my determination to work in video games. I had a month to work with a student development team to create their soundtrack for a grade, but I went a bit above and beyond what my professors needed from me. While I didn't have the time to create every sound effect in the game, I was able to work with the team to scope out a massive chunk of elements that needed sounds. I chipped away at what I could and they were able to use the rest of the list to see what sounds they needed from the libraries they were provided.

The team also wanted to add dialogue for the main character, an important NPC, and the boss. So, I cast three different voice actors of varying experience levels (one complete beginner, one intermediate, and one professional) and recorded and edited their dialogue. I also worked with the team member writing the script to help edit and make things sound a bit more natural.

For Origins' soundtrack, the team didn't have a clear direction of what they wanted things to sound like. So, I worked with their appointed audio director to pick a few key references and ended up creating an epic orchestral soundtrack that pulled mainly from God of War. Most elements of the soundtrack were composed with virtual instruments, but the boss score, The Beginning of the End, does feature a live trumpet recording from Kevin Kraus. The original plan for the level music was to have a vertically composed composition that would dynamically adjust to in-game triggers, but due to some time crunches, the team ended up splitting the different layers up into multiple horizontal pieces for the game's levels. The full piece, Discovery, is available under the composition section on the Works page, but does not play that way in-game.

Origins is available to download on itch.io!
